Peer support volunteers offer essential help to individuals by utilizing their common lived experiences. They provide emotional, social, and practical support, frequently in environments such as mental health, substance abuse recovery, and community health programs. This assistance is grounded in mutual understanding and respect, promoting a sense of connection and empowerment.
Your experience can be shared to help and benefit others.

You’re ready to become a mentor if:
You’re an adult at least 18 years of age and ideally one year beyond your lived experience. This means that you have had enough time to reflect on your own journey and have gained valuable insights that can be shared with someone who is just beginning their path. Your age and experience can provide a sense of stability and guidance, allowing you to relate to the challenges faced by your mentee while also offering a broader perspective on overcoming obstacles.
You’re ready to listen to someone else’s story. Mentoring is not just about imparting wisdom; it is also about being an active listener. You should be prepared to hear about the experiences, struggles, and triumphs of your mentee. This requires patience and empathy, as well as a genuine interest in understanding their unique circumstances. A good mentor creates a safe space for their mentee to express themselves openly, fostering trust and encouraging honest dialogue.
Feel comfortable mentoring and able to separate your emotions while comforting someone new to their experience. It is essential to maintain a balance between being supportive and remaining emotionally available without becoming overwhelmed by your own feelings. This ability to compartmentalize your emotions allows you to provide the necessary support while also guiding your mentee through their challenges. You should be equipped with strategies to manage your emotional responses, ensuring that you can be a steady source of encouragement and advice as your mentee navigates their journey.
